Things To Consider When Choosing Wide Width Roller Skates

Wide Width Roller Skates

Roller Skates Sizing

Finding the right size for your roller skates can be a bit tricky. The most important thing to consider is that the skate should have a firm fit around the feet without being too loose or too tight.

Some people choose the same size as their normal shoe while others decide to go a size up for the right fit.

For first-time buyers, it is recommended to go a size up as well as ensure that you read through the size guide first because if a certain model is too small, one may need to go two sizes up.

Most important is to try your roller skates at home and ensure the toes don’t touch the nose of the skate because it would mean they are too small.

Low-Cut vs High-Top Boots

High-top skates are a type of boot that extends above the ankle and most new skaters prefer it because they offer additional protection to the ankle and more stability.

They also have more padding around the ankle area for greater skate stability. The high boot ensures warmth during cold weather but is difficult during warm weather. High top boots offer less effort to maneuver for skaters who want to perform technical turns and twists,

Low-top boots do not extend above the level of the ankle. They are low-cut and most experienced skaters love them because they provide more fun when skating.

They don’t have much padding but are lightweight hence more speed. The low-cut boots offer flexibility with less ankle support. They are also more breathable hence do not get too hot on your feet.

Boot Material

The roller skates are available as soft-boots/soft shells or hard-boots/hard-shells. The hard boots are good for longer rides and fitness use because they provide good support and stability.

They have an advantage because the liner can be replaced if it becomes worn out.

The soft boots are a great choice for those who want to maneuver like in discos and dancing. The soft boots also have the advantage of weighing less and being better ventilated.

How to Measure Your Foot Width Step By Step

  • Step 1: Trace your Foot

Put a piece of paper on the ground and if the foot is bigger than one sheet of paper tape two pieces of paper together with one slightly overlapping the other. Ensure that you wear the socks you intend to wear with the shoe.

Ensure that your full weight is on the foot for accurate measurement or have someone else trace around your foot while keeping the pen at a 90-degree angle. Ensure you trace your foot a few more times for accuracy.

  • Step 2: Measure the Length

Using a measuring tape; measure the drawn outline from the back/central part of the heel to the end of the longest toe.

  • Step 3: Measure the Width

Take your measuring tape and wrap it around the widest part of the foot at the bunion joint and ensure you have your full weight for accurate measurements.

Roller Skates Heat Molding For A Better Fit

Boots that require heat molding have thermoplastic at the ankle, therefore, can be heated and molded to your fit which is perfect for anyone with skinny or wide ankles.

You can use a hairdryer to heat mold your skate boot.  Out of the box, the boot has a stiff solid counter. Therefore, turn your hairdryer on too high and move it gently around the heel area of the boot.

After three minutes your boot is starting to go soft and it takes five minutes for the boot to be ready for molding.

Do not squeeze the boot too hard so it cannot get into the size you don’t like. Put your boot on, lace it up and hold the heel tightly as it cools and it gets into its new position.

You can also use the oven to mold your boot, preheat the oven to 85 Celsius for 20 minutes. Use a thermometer for accurate temperatures.

Place the boots in the oven for five minutes and remove them ready to mold.

Then put your boots on and lace them up and squeeze the heel until it cools. Then your boots have been custom molded to your fit. You can heat mold your boots as many times as you like.

Difference Between Wide Feet And Flat Feet Roller Skates

Often, wide feet and flat feet are normally put together as the same thing. It is possible to have both but they are not the same and you can’t go for skates without your specific needs.

Wide feet refer to the width of the foot while flat feet refer to the arches of the feet. Therefore, the skate that accommodates wide feet has a wide toe box while a skate that can accommodate flat feet has more support.

Some skates may support all feet sizes but more often you’ll need to get bespoke wide feet skates.

Roller Skates Components

Wide Roller Skate Boot Components

Boot

The skate’s boots often are in two options: flexible or rigid.  Flexible boots are good for starters who are trying to figure out how to move around. Flexible boots are lighter are for and are advanced skaters who want maneuverability.

Boots also be made of leather and vinyl. Vinyl is less stretched and cheaper hence good for beginners. Leather is good for durability and performance.

Wheels

The roller skates have four wheels which are in pairs for stability when standing.  For a first-time buyer, they need to only consider whether they are up for soft wheels or hard wheels.

The wheel’s hardness is specified by a Durometer scale between 0-100A. When the hardness is close to 100A, the wheel is harder.

Softer wheels give better shock absorption and grip but a shorter lifespan while harder wheels provide minimum grip and shock absorption but last longer.

Bearings

Treat the bearings well for your roller skates to perform their best by avoiding moisture and water as much as possible as well as avoiding dirt and sand.

Usually, you don’t have to pay much attention to the bearings when you are buying roller quad skates because it is rare to reach a high enough speed to affect the rating of the ABEC bearings you need to have.

Truck and Plates

The roller skates have a plate and a truck underneath.  Most of the plates are made of nylon for lightweight and the trucks are made of aluminum to make them heavy and strong.

The roller skates are also cushioned underneath and can be replaced to how you like them.

The cushioning determines how agile the skates are because the softer the cushion the higher the skates’ agility and the harder the cushion the stable and directional the skate becomes.

Toe Stop

Apart from having four wheels in pairs, another unique characteristic about roller skates is the toe stop. The toe stop can be used as a brake or to set off with.

Toe stop needs to be replaced before it gets completely worn down or before it becomes exceedingly difficult or impossible to dismount.

Toe stops also come in two types adjustable and non-adjustable toe stops. The adjustable toe-stops allow one to adjust the toe stop height to suit needs while a non-adjustable toe stop must be entirely replaced if you want any changes.

Final Words

Our choice for the best roller skates for wide feet is the VNLA Parfait Roller Skates because they are super comfortable and sturdy.

They are also made of genuine suede meaning that they will serve you longer throughout your skating adventures as it is resistant to hard surfaces.

Other skate options are available depending on your skating style and preference.
