Are Roller Skates Allowed in Stores?

If you are an avid rollerskater then I’m sure you’ve been tempted to roll into a grocery store with your skates on at least once. No one wants to take off their skates just to buy a few items from a store. So, maybe you’ve already done it or maybe you didn’t just to stay out of trouble. But, are roller skates allowed in stores? Is it illegal?

Whether roller skates are allowed or not depends on which store you are talking about. Some allow roller skates in their stores. These stores are normally very large in size. Other stores do not allow roller skates mainly because of the size of their store and the inconvenience it causes to the people inside.

In this article, I am going to explain the reasons why many stores do not allow roller skates and the things you should know if you ever think about skating inside a store. So, let’s begin!

Is it Illegal to Roller Skate in Stores?

The answer depends on where you are roller skating. The rules and regulations that apply to inline skating, skateboarding, and other analogous activities vary from one state to another. These rules even vary widely from city to city.

Sometimes these rules and regulations are grouped with the rules that apply to bikes, and bicycle rentals. But this is not always the case. Some states and cities enact laws that are specific to roller skating, skateboarding, and other similar activities.

For instance, some cities enact laws aimed to keep the roller skaters out of public places like sidewalks, malls, or grocery stores. They do that to keep the pedestrians and the customers safe from the negative stereotype of rebellious roller skaters and skateboarders. Other laws are aimed to govern roller skating and skateboarding as an alternate means of transportation.

So, are roller skates illegal in stores? The answer can be yes or no, depending on where you are. For example, Miami is a skater-friendly city and roller skates are allowed in many stores there. But this is only applicable for large stores only. If you skate inside a small store, the chances of the store manager telling you to get out are very high.

On the other hand, in cities like New Orleans where the rules and regulations for roller skating or skateboarding are not defined as like in the case of bicycles, skating inside a store there might lead to legal troubles.

Why Do Many Stores Don’t Allow Roller Skates?

Roller Skating has become very popular among people of all ages. Nowadays, you can see lots of viral roller-skating videos on social media websites and video sharing platforms like Facebook, YouTube, or TikTok. Skateboards and roller skates are not only a great means of transportation, they also have great health benefits. In fact, skateboarding and rollerblading offer a full-body workout.

But roller skates are not allowed everywhere. Even if it is allowed in your city, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can roller skate to almost anywhere in the city. Whether a store allows roller skates or not depends on the store’s policy. Most of the stores and cities do not allow roller skates. And they have many good reasons for that. Some of the reasons are given below:

  • Causes Problems to People Inside the Store.

The first reason is that roller skates cause problems for the customers and staff inside the store. Most of the people inside the store are walking around to locate what they need. Roller skates can go significantly faster than the average walking speed of a human.

Stores are often a crowded place. So, when someone is roller skating inside the store, they might bump into someone and injure themselves and the person they bumped into. Not only that, when someone is skating inside a store, the sound rollerblade wheels make due to friction can be very irritating for people around.

  • Can Damage Store’s Products.

Another reason is that skateboarders can damage the store’s products. Roller skates can go significantly fast- maneuvering them at high speeds is very tough. So, if you are skating inside a store at high speed, you might crash into product aisles and thus damaging them. This is why a lot of stores do not allow roller skates or skateboards inside.

When is it Not Okay to Roller Skate in Stores?

There are specific laws and regulations regarding roller skating and skateboarding in almost every state and city in the United States. Even if the city law allows outdoor skating, whether stores will allow roller skates or not depends entirely on the store’s policy. And If you break any rules, you may get punished and even go to jail in the worst-case scenario.

So, you should know when and where it is not okay to skate in stores. The first way is to look for signs that specifically say that “dismount bikes and other wheeled devices before entering the store” If you see this type of sign in front of a store, that means roller skates are not allowed inside the store.

If you go into a small crowded store, assume that the store will not allow roller skates inside. Sometimes there might not be any sort of sign prohibiting skates in their store. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the store will allow roller skates. If you go inside a store wearing your skates and someone from the authority tells you that you cannot skate inside there, you should just tell them you didn’t know skates were not allowed there. Don’t argue with them.

Roller Skating in Stores: Things You Need to Know

When you are skating inside a store where roller skates are allowed, you should follow some instructions. Some of them are given below:

  • Always Wear Protective Gears.

No matter where you are skating indoors or outdoors, always wear safety gear like a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Accidents can happen to anyone, no matter how experienced and skilled a roller skater is. This is why you should always wear protective gear.

While buying protective gear, always buy the best quality product even if it costs much. Because your safety should be above everything else. And one more thing, only buy the gears that fit you perfectly. If you buy a protective gear that is large or small from your size, it might not be able to keep you safe in the event of an accident.
